southern_belle,
Thanks for the information. If I ever get to Williamsburg, I will try to see it that exhibit is still around. It sounds like it would be very interesting!

I'm so in love with Addy's undergarments, that I'm considering a second set! The hoop skirt (crinoline) is AMAZING! In addition to being a part of history, it gives dresses an INCREDIBLE full look.

Felicity's add a lot, too! Besides she needs her pocket, or there's no use for the slits in her dresses!

I have Felicity's undergarments, and I like them. They seem to have the nice purpose of making her gowns poof out. I have always admired Kirsten's and Samantha's undergarments, but I am wondering what these are used for? Do the dolls wear them under their clothes? Is this an item that is going to just go unused even though they are cute?

My sam and kirsten have their undergarments on. I like them from a historical standpoint and they serve no practical purpose for the fashions. I love history and love that my dolls have complete historical outfits.

When my daughter complains that her undies give her a wedgie I like to show her samantha's garters. That quiets her down a bit.

I like them for the historical purpose. But agree that they are not necessary for play. I also think they should be included with the doll.

Abby ~ to answer your question ~

Did you read Minuk's book? It is similar to the situation with her friend when she "becomes a woman". They had to stay inside, away from everyone during that time! They just sat all day! Can you imagine the pain? And nothing to do but just sit there and wait it out And of course everyone would probably know then too, but it's not like they would ever say anything.

My sister broached the delicate subject of womanhood with a costumed interpreter at Plimoth Plantation living history museum and the lady said that they have a garnment sort of like a baby's diaper they wear.

As for nursing mothers, I have seen patterns for dresses where the front part of the top buttons open and comes down when necessary.
